The text by John Szarkowski, director emeritus of New York MoMA's photography department, gives biographical details and gracefully places Adams in the history of 20th-century photography and the conservation movement. Impeccable technical standards were a hallmark of Adams's work, and this book follows his tradition. Each black-and-white image is a tritone, meaning that it was printed from three different plates corresponding to different parts of the original photograph's gray scale, resulting in an extremely rich chromatic range. Light really does appear to glisten off a wet rock, and white aspens to glow. The images have been very carefully chosen, each page of a double spread complementing the other. The book's paper is custom-made, it is bound in linen and presented in a linen slipcase, and a complimentary facsimile of one of Adams's icons is included. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Ansel Adams' birth, John Szarkowski has selected what he considers Adams' finest works and offers a critique that ranks the photographer as one of the great artists of our time.Szarkowski, Director Emeritus of the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, often selects unexpected and unfamiliar prints in his collection. The book is great in every way. It was printed in tritones at Meridian Printing on paper made in Toulouse, France. The plates are scaled to reflect the relative size of the original photographs; the book and slipcase are bound in a linen cloth made in the Netherlands. It is a fitting tribute to Ansel Adams' art.Adams' pictures define for me what the term landscape means. This is a great collection of his work and should serve provide a firm foundation for Adams' elevation from a photographer to an artist.

A beautifully presented and boxed/packaged volume with a wonderful accompanying text. This is a great buy at an excellent price. This does not mean that one should ignore the other Ansel Adams that are available through Amazon. "Ansel Adams: Yosemite and The High Sierra" is also a must buy for anyone loving this photographer.

I got this for a penny so I think it is a steal. The tri tone prints in this book are well done and there are a lot of Ansel Adams photos to look at. I would recommend this to anyone interested in black and white photography Even if its just to see what the hype about Adams work is all about.

If you can only afford to buy one photo book / coffee table book this year . . . this is the book to buy. Period. This oversized book is beautifully reproduced and lovingly bound to last for ages; a commemorative print, not available elsewhere, is reproduced as a separate plate -- suitable for framing, which is a nice touch: Who among us can afford an original Ansel Adams photograph? As beautiful as this is as an example of book-making, its real value lies in the selection of photos.Of course, no two photographers will ever agree as to what photos should have been included in this massive retrospective -- outside of the obvious ones like "Moonrise Over Hernandez County" -- but every photographer who looks at this book should find inspiration in Ansel's inimitable "eye" that saw, and captured on film, the ordinary and transformed it into the extraordinary; a photographer who saw the extraordinary and transformed it into the sublime.As for the text: I think an academic perspective is certainly appropriate for such a retrospective, but I would dearly have loved to see a piece by, say, Joseph Holmes (NATURAL LIGHT--a gorgeous collection of photos) or another photographer to give it, so to speak, a "through the lens" perspective.Although there are other coffee-table sized books published of Ansel Adams's work, this one sets a high watermark and, as such, should find a permanent place in the library of every serious photographer, aspiring photographer, or anyone with a sense of beauty who can appreciate the rare and wonderful talent that is Ansel Adams.

The book is very well produced, with the reproductions as good as any you are likely to find outside an original photograph. The only criticism I have relates to the publisher's claim that this is "one of the most beautiful books ever made." Compared to what? The Gutenberg Bible, for instance?? Such a claim creates expectations that must inevitably lead to disappointment. But rest assured that it is a very well made book which feels substantial and the whole production, including most importantly, the pictures, are of the highest possible quality.

I primarily purchased this book because I was interested in learning more about Tupac who I'm big fan of. So I was thinking the parts about Frank's life were going to be boring-- I was dead wrong. Frank's story is very sad but at the same time fascinating. There is so much he has seen his life and I found it very interesting to read about how he processed all the events that took place in his life. Frank is an excellent storyteller. This book is written in a conversational style which makes for an easy and smooth read. Frank uses a lot of slang terms but you should able to keep up if you're a hip hop head like me. Now about the Tupac parts. Tupac is an incredibly complicated individual. He's kind-hearted yet confrontational. He was wise yet immature. He had a huge generous heart but that heart was also filled with rage and anguish. Frank did a great job at great job at documenting all sides of Tupac. The philosophical side, the comedian side, the angry side, and the calm side. Frank explained that Tupac had a gifted mind that was rich with knowledge. But Tupac was still a troubled a young man who felt pressure to live up to his "thug life" reputation. And Pac seemed to know that his fast life would ultimately catch up with him one day. Frank discusses that he loved Tupac and Tupac's death put him in a depression. In the end of the book, Frank talks about how he got out of his depression and how his relationship with God strengthened. The epilogue contains a very heart-wrenching conversation between Frank and Afeni Shakur. This was an incredibly enjoyable book. I didn't feel like I was reading a book. It felt like I was having a conversation with Frank. The Tupac stories were very entertaining. Tupac accomplished so much in the last year of his life and this book does a tremendous job at capturing the charismatic man that is Tupac.

Excellent read from beginning to end. For Tupac fans, you really get to know him.Tupac’s thoughts ran so deep, and he experienced and accomplished so much, it is hard to believe he was barely 25 when he died. This book will remind you of that.

With so many stories of his life and legacy, fans find themselves looking for a bit of insight that was not known. This book allowed me to get access to a man that safely carried me through a decade of my life. A gift from God he was. Frank you did your thing, PAC would be proud. Thanks for sharing this part of him with us who loved him!

No one could tell you any better unless they were probably the outlaws or Afeni Shakur herself and she approved this book so I'm very happy to read this. Franks lets you in on Pacs life the good, bad and ugly. From his sexcapades,incomparable work ethic,his anger to his more softer side.
