Out of all the Splunk books I've read, they all seem to do the same thing. They start at the very basics, and they work their way north. And that's fantastic. From beginner to intermediate to advanced. Vince does a great job of getting you to the "aha" moment by taking you, bite by bite, through the content where you can index and parse out your own ideas about what questions you'd like to ask your own data. And that's what it comes down to, right? Opening your mind? This book will help you understand the platform, understand the potential, and then sets you free, liberating you from the confines of your previous database based tool, or endless grepping projects. Aka pain & suffering. If you want a very straight forward read, something to get you to your own aha moment, start here. you'll be Splunking before you know it.

Despite the fact that it's beginning to age, this is a really great foundation book for anyone getting started with Splunk. I use it as a reference book quite often and I've been using Splunk for about three years.That said, it's lacking quite a bit in some of the most powerful features and functions introduced in Version 6, 6.1 and 6.2. It's truly worth the Kindle price for the deep dive into data onboarding searching and reporting. I used it as a supplement to the formal Splunk Training courses and it's taken me quite far along in my education. The best thing about it, is the interesting perspectives on the composite commands like timechart, top and rare. That really was an eye opener seeing that those are really a bunch of commands all packaged up. Totally useful.

March 2015: update - I originally gave this book 5 stars, and I love it still. But most technical books tend to age, and books about Splunk are not an exception. Two years on, I would say that the parts of the book that deal with searching are still relevant and interesting. And if you have a need to learn Splunk's Advanced XML, this is a great source. That said, most new users of Splunk will never need to use Advanced XML. The Splunk administration interface has been significantly updated and simplified in the last two years.Original review:As a Splunk employee, I consider myself pretty knowledgable, especially about the search language. I found a number of mind-expanding ideas in this book, as well as a solid explanation of the basics.If this seems a bit advanced for you, do try out the examples in the book. And perhaps David Carasso's book, Exploring Splunk (also available from Amazon) would be helpful, too.

Very good book for beginner to intermediate. Its a little light on specifics for some of the more complicated tasks. Splunks web site isn't the best source for documentation so it's nice to have a reference.

Vince does a great job of walking a user through installing, configuring, using and optimizing Splunk for any organization. There are many chapters that I will read and re-read as I use Splunk everyday to get my IT work done.Thumbs up!

I really enjoyed this book and in a weekend it took an awful lot the mystery out of Splunk and got me productive very quickly.

After the conquest of Mexico, colonial authorities attempted to enforce Christian beliefs among indigenous peoples—a project they envisioned as spiritual warfare. The author's innovative interpretation of these efforts is punctuated by three events: the creation of an Inquisition tribunal in Mexico in 1571; the native rebellion of Tehuantepec in 1660; and the emergence of eerily modern strategies for isolating idolaters, teaching Spanish to natives, and obtaining medical proof of sorcery from the 1720s onwards. Rather than depicting native devotions solely from the viewpoint of their colonial codifiers, this book rescues indigenous perspectives on their own beliefs. This is achieved by an analysis of previously unknown or rare ritual texts that circulated in secrecy in Nahua and Zapotec communities through an astute appropriation of European literacy. Tavárez contends that native responses gave rise to a colonial archipelago of faith in which local cosmologies merged insights from Mesoamerican and European beliefs. In the end, idolatry eradication inspired distinct reactions: while Nahua responses focused on epistemological dissent against Christianity, Zapotec strategies privileged confrontations in defense of native cosmologies.
